During the 130- year history of the Törley factory, the company succefsfully survived two world wars, and kept producing the great quality sparkling wine of this region. Some interesting facts about József Törley, the Törley company and sparkling wine creator:

törley sparkling wine* József Törley founded the Törley company in Budafok, in 1882, when he decided to invest the knowledge he had acquired in Reims, into his own country. He was a great winemaker, and found that the Etyek-Budafok region has similar climate and soil conditions as the Champagne region in France.

* He  was the first to use trucks for transporting goods in Hungary.

* He was among the very first people to own a driving licence in the country (number 3 or number 5), and also caused the first accident, as the legend says, by driving “too fast”, at 20 kms/hour (12 miles/hour).

* He also proved to be an outstanding businessman, as he was using the name “Törley” as his “marketing tool”. It appeared on lavishly decorated menu cards and bills.

* During the Second World War the company was still working with 4 people, and fortunately was not destroyed during the bombing.törley museum

* After the nationalization (1949), the family was deported from the country. Currently it is owned by the German Henkel company / Oetker family/,  but the labor and management is Hungarian.

*The Törley sparkling wine production in Hungary is approximately 12-14 million bottles per year and has close to a 50% domestic market share.
